Top 5 Mother’s Day Gifts for a Homeschooling Mom

by Summer Minor

“In all my efforts to learn to read, my mother shared fully my ambition and sympathized with me and aided me in every way she could. If I have done anything in life worth attention, I feel sure that I inherited the disposition from my mother.”– Booker T. Washington

Mother’s Day is fast approaching and some of you probably still haven’t thought abut what to get the women in your life. Moms work hard, whether they stay at home or work outside the house there isn’t a minute that goes by that they aren’t busy. If one of those hardworking moms also happens to be hard at work homeschooling her children here are my top five picks for what you can get her for Mother’s Day.

1. Maid service for the day. Between teaching, helping, cooking, fixing, chasing, and trying to sit down for a minute moms can be pretty wore out. Often she has so much to do that there just is no way to get it all done. Why not lend a helping hand by offering your services as her personal maid for a day. Do laundry, wash the dishes, vacuum the floors, and any other household chores that need to be done. If you are not very domestic yourself spend a little money and hire a professional maid to come by the house for the day.

2. Pamper her. Spending all day taking care of the kids and the house often leaves mom without time to even get a quick shower in. The thought of soaking in the tub, getting a facial, maybe even having her hair done could be enough to float mom away to cloud nine. So why not get her a gift certificate to a local salon where she can be primped and pampered to her heart’s delight. Add in a massage and she’s likely to come home with a smile that lasts for weeks. If you can’t afford that much you can still treat her to a gift basket full of yummy bath goodies and the promise of a full day kids free to treat herself right. My favorite is this oh so yummy bath set in chocolate that comes with handcrafted soap, skin softening powdered milk bath, and a cute little lotion bar. (hint hint)

3. Get her out of the house and into some adult space. Beg, plead, and bribe if you must to find someone to babysit the kids for just one night. Go with what she likes. Maybe tickets to a play would send her to the moon, or maybe she hasn’t been out dancing in forever. Would be love to be able to visit an art gallery without having to explain every piece to the kids? Whatever it is that she does not have the chance to do anyone would be perfect for her.

4. Help with supplies. It seems odd for some, but many homeschooling moms actually drool over all the great books. gadgets, toys, and more that are out there. Most of which we will never be able to afford. Gift certificates to local craft shops or school supply stores could make a mom faint. Find out if she has been dreaming about a certain curriculum or trip that just never seems affordable. Find out if she has a wishlist at Amazon.com (because really, who doesn’t?) and go on a shopping spree from your own computer. Even practical items such as desks, tables, shelving units, and cabinets are sometimes more valuable than the traditional gifts of jewelry and chocolates (though don’t underestimate the chocolate).

5. Be involved. Sometimes the best gift you can give is yourself. If you still aren’t sure what to get mom this Mother’s Day why not give her the gift of your time. Make a weekly date, even if it is just for coffee around the kitchen table. Take her out to lunch once an a while and listen to her talk about what ever she wants. Spend a day off doing something with the whole family that you know she loves. Just being there and being a part of her life is often the best gift of all.
